From a humble beginning in 1981 by 15 high school students in Massachusetts, the "Students Against Destructive Decisions" concept has found its way to Pelican Rapids High School with a new, local SADD chapter.
Originally founded as "Students Against Driving Drunk," SADD has grown to become the nation's dominant peer-to-peer youth education and prevention organization, with thousands of chapters throughout the country.
In 1997, SADD broadened its mission to become "Students Against Destructive Decisions."
Though SADD continues to stand for a firm "No Use" message related to other destructive behaviors that are harmful to young people. Besides underage drinking, SADD also zeroes in on substance abuse, impaired driving, violence, and suicide.
"SADD involves young people delivering prevention messages to their peers through creative school activities and campaigns," says Kayls Miltich, the PRHS advisor.
Serving as SADD officers are Katie Woolever, president; Tyler Scott, vice president; Kristin Westby, secretary; Matt Satterlie, Treasurer; and 2005-06 grade-level representatives Carlie Johnson, senior in '05-06; Yusuf Abdi, junior in '05-06; Omar Zavala, sophomore in '05-06; and Tydan Storrusten, freshman in '05-06.
These eight officers are responsible for leading the organization, offering membership, and bringing awareness to the potentially harmful results of destructive decisions relevant to students at Pelican Rapids High School.
"To begin with, we will sponsor a car wreck display from the Minnesota State Highway Patrol the week prior to Prom, as well as continue to promote the signing of SADD student contracts (the sole criteria for membership) to the student body. So far 75 students have signed a SADD contract for non-use." says Katie Woolever, president of the new SADD chapter at PRHS.
