Hillcrest soccer team riding high

A global effort has the Fergus Falls Hillcrest boys soccer team chasing history.
Boasting players from seven different countries, the Comets have scored 94 goals this fall, four better than the previous school record and seventh best in state history according to the Minnesota State High School Soccer Coaches Association Web site. And they have a minimum of two games to play.
“You always see some talent,” Hillcrest coach Rod Jensen said of players hailing from Mexico, Somalia, Brazil, South Korea, Norway, Bosnia and the United States. “The question is whether they’ll come together and play as a team. Soccer is totally about team, especially the way we play in the United States.”
The Comets (15-1-1) have been out of this world since a 3-0 loss against St. Cloud Cathedral in the season opener, a defeat avenged with a 4-1 victory on Monday. Since forming its program in 2001, Hillcrest has gone 58-20-6, but had never previously beaten the Crusaders, losing twice in the Class 1A, Section 8 title game.
Can a first state tournament bid be far behind?
“I’ve thought other years I was going to get there and haven’t made it yet,” said Jensen, whose team has also posted six shutouts. “So I’m not speculating.”
