Fast-growing Family Dollar operates nearly 6,000 stores in 44 states and the District of Columbia. Hardlines (such as food, health and beauty aids, housewares, and toys) account for nearly 80% of sales; the stores also sell apparel, shoes, and linens. Family Dollar emphasizes neighborhood stores near its low- and middle-income customers in rural and urban areas. Most merchandise (national brands, Family Dollar private labels, and unbranded items) is less than $10. Family Dollar was founded in 1959 by the father of CEO Howard Levine.
