Bus Crash on Foggy Road Kills 37 in Peru
Fri Jul 9, 2004 06:01 PM ET
LIMA, Peru (Reuters) - At least 37 people died on Friday when two Peruvian buses crashed head-on in thick fog in the town of Palpa, south of the capital, Lima, police said.
"It was a head-on crash. We believe one of the buses left its lane to pass a truck," a police officer who declined to be named told Reuters.
"We know at the moment there are 37 dead but there could be more because of the scale of the crash," the officer said. The accident happened some 230 miles south of Lima.
Hundreds of people die in bus crashes every year in Peru because of perilous roads, poorly maintained vehicles and bad judgment by drivers in treacherous weather conditions.
