One of my purposes in keeping this blog going is to notice and share change in the community as the years pass. Librarians argue with me about the shelf life of digital text and photo. Time will tell.
So what's going on in this photo?
Some drive by Bridges wishing, hoping, praying, believing it has morphed into a computer place. Still the neon window curtains advertise beer. At least this summer we got cedar lattice around the horse fence so people driving or walking by won't see us drinking and those of us who've had too much will not spill out on to Broadway.
Is it the Buick? Car of choice of 56572 natives? Only 56537 has more?
No, it's what's happening next door to Bridges...on what I call Milt's Lot, otherwise known as "Field of Nightmares." Many years ago, who can remember when, it was Milton Siefert purchased this lot with the intent to build a hardware store and possibly a laundromat. He was told by City Fathers (would the Mayor please correct me if I am wrong) that 56572 already had two hardware stores, that a third was not welcome. Milt got mad. Lakeland True Value Hardware and the Cornfield Cafe are the result. What could have been, was not. One of the best deals Milt made was the deal he didn't get, in downtown 56572.
More recently the lot was going to be used as a used car lot. Once again the owner ran afoul of City Fathers (would the Mayor please correct me if I am wrong) for not being willing to pour cement, basically.
Yesterday, crews came in and began excavation for Dr. Jeff Mackner's new Pelican Eye Clinic. Jeff wil be moving out of J.P.Wallace State Bank, one would hope to make room for Lawyer Matthew Soberg of the Krekelberg Law Firm.
When she heard this morning what was happening next door to Bridges, the response of a local, non-native woman was, "What about all these empty buildings around town?" You don't need eyes to have vision. Jeff has both, thankfully.
A Uyghur’s Escape From China Was Just the Beginning
-
He fled brutal repression — only to discover, as so many Uyghur refugees
have, that China’s power stretches far beyond its borders.
