School district courts minorities
While only less than 2 percent of the Fergus Falls student body is made up of minorities, that could soon change with the help of recently approved aid from the state.
Fergus Falls superintendent Dr. Mark Bezek said the district's schools will soon open its doors to minority students who are spilling out from the over-crowded Pelican Rapids school district.
More than 20 percent of the Pelican Rapids student body are minorities, Bezek said.
The application to assist with bringing in minorities was approved early this week, business manager Mark Masten said, and implementation will begin immediately.
Approval means that the Fergus Falls school district will receive $166,000 from the state to help raise minority awareness amongst staff and students.
Masten said the district plans on hiring three foreign language teachers for the elementary schools and will begin interviewing for the positions as soon as possible.
The district will also spend $5,000 to make it easier for students in the Pelican Rapids district to participate in after school activities in Fergus Falls. The money could be spent on interpreters, transportation or other needs that Masten said would not be determined until the project gets rolling.
Although the state aid is intended to make for a smooth transition for minorities who choose to migrate to the local district for education, Masten said that even if they decide to stay put in Pelican Rapids, Fergus Falls will still see the money.

Jim and other fans of 56572--
Just to let you know that Kent Baldry and I have received two telephone calls of apology from young Sarah Horner, budding journalist from the FFJournal. She will be coming to 56572 on Wednesday to meet with myself (as the new Cultural Collaborative Coordinator) and possible Joan Ellison, who wrote the original funding grant.
Sarah has admitted that she didn't exactly get the story straight and is eager to straighten this out!! Thanks for your interest and for originally breaking the story some time ago.
