These days of ice storms have some of us balding Beatles fans pondering retirement. Life as a snowbird suddenly seems attractive. One of my dream jobs would be reviving Garrison Keillor's Mr.Blue. Having been a faithful spouse of thirty years I would probably find answers difficult to come by. I am also considering applying as an apprentice to the The Ethicist, Randy Cohen, who wrotes in the New York Times Magazine every Sunday.
Here was my ethical dilemma this past week (The Week at the Wailing Wall):
Dear Ethicist,
A woman, who may or may not be my customer, leaves me a voicemail complaint. Let's assume she is my customer and I do not have the privilege to ask her to never grace the door of my business again. She does not identify herself nor does she leave a number so I can return her call and answer her question. Push 3 to delete and fuggedaboutit??The female computer voicemailbox voice reads me back the mobile number of this customer. Is it ethical for me to use this information to call the customer back when she obviously does not care to talk to me? Had I not been on a different line when she called, had I answered, would she have hung up? Do women just keep calling in hope they get voicemail so they can vent me a voicemail? Does it make them feel better or worse? Should I try it on her mobile number to find out? If I sent her mobile a thousand voicemails, would she run out of minutes trying to delete them all?Could this issue escalate? Is revenge worth it? Nobody gets right to the Boss on the first call. Is this my own fault? Should I insulate myself by hiring a Secretary to screen all my calls? Should I just politely return her call to inform that that if she were as clever as some of my regular female voicemail venters she would have her mobile number protected? Can I buy a fancier voicemailbox which presorts my voicemails into say positive-neutral-negative cubbies so I can listen to the bad ones earlier in the day, ending the day by listening to the uplifting ones before heading home to my spouse? Can I buy a fancier voicemailbox which automatically transcribes all voice mails and send them to my emailbox? At least the most painful tones of the female wail would not pierce me anymore. Guys have feelings too. How can I protect myself from this bullying abuse?
