"When Fergus Falls lost their bond election last fall, the community directed administrators to explore other opportunities. HF 3994 would be the first time a school district uses a local sales tax to fund a building. The bill was presented by Superintendent Mark Bezek to a House subcommittee and requires a referendum by local taxpayers. Speaking for taxpayers in the school district, Darrell Tungseth said the opposition in the last election was based on the unfairness of the levy, which hit a small number of people so much more than others. He argued a sales tax would hit a larger number of people more fairly. Representative Nornes indicated the business community is in support of the bill, which was laid over."
My guess is Representative Nornes asked only the Fergus Falls business community. Many 56572 residents shop at bigbox retail outlets in Fergus Falls. Will one be asked for one's zip code before paying so the sales tax goes back to where it came from? Who will help us build our school?
