Making the cut

Friday. My mother and brother-in-law are scheduled for early morning angiograms at hospitals across town. My job is to hold hands and communicate.

Mom's hospital does not allow and does not enforce cell phone usage. They have no wireless internet. She is quickly returned to cath lab recovery and I am told to return in two hours. (She got home for lunch)

Arriving across town, my brother-in-law is just being wheeled in and my sister needs her hand held. Cells phones are allowed, the signal is one bar. The WiFi signal is strong and free. I start sending SMS and email.

My niece the golfer, fresh out of bed looking for lunch at 11 a.m. pops into the cath lobby with news that Tiger is about to miss the cut at the US Open. "Check it out for me at si.com."

"Dear Guest Connect, unfortunately, we cannot take you to si.com. They show photographs of scantily clad women. This is contrary to hospital policy."

Brother-in-law went home on Saturday. Tiger on Friday.
