My Danish parents (above photo taken this morning) are retiring from business tomorrow. They can live in the house for three more months. Dad was born in the house in 1919 and took over the bookstore from his father. Over the years the needs of the customers have changed, Big box stores in large towns a half hour away are sapping the blood of Main Street Small Town Denmark. What has sustained their business since 1949 has been the Danish Lottery. Since 1949 they have been the only shop in town selling lottery tickets. Mom has stood by Dad's side all those years, until this summer they never took a vacation. I worked in their bookstore in the early 70's. I wish Mom and Dad well in their belated retirement. I hope they buy one last lottery ticket tomorrow before the new Jensen takes over on Friday. I hope that ticket wins the 5 million on Saturday. They deserve.
