Sunrise over Pelican Lake at the Rolling R (Rengstorf) Ranch

Jim Brandenburg has photographed wolves threading their way across a snow field in an arctic blizzard and zebras huddled in the light of a fire on the African plains. But his latest exhibit brings the Minnesota native much closer to home.

"Touch the Sky," which opens next week at the Bell Museum, is a collection of photographs taken on the prairies of the Midwest. Brandenburg, who gained fame as a National Geographic photographer, said his first pictures were taken on the prairie and that he honed his skills focusing on its "simple elements."All my life, I've wanted to tell the story of the prairie," he said. "It's one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world."
