Walking into Riverside Coffee one should always have the nose primed. Who knows what is wafting out of Tabi's kitchen - hot beef sandwiches on garlic toast yesterday? Who knows what the brew of the day will smell like? This morning it was like walking into Macy's. Every forty-something - give or take a few moons -female in 56572 was there. It was an OS (olfactory smorgasbord). I had forgotten that there are still so many attractive women in 56572. They all seemed to know one another. I could barely hear myself think over the laughter. There was a short line in front of the cash register. The tape ran out the register to the floor. Riverside had been open a little over an hour. The City Administrator came and got his to go, so did 56572's largest turkey grower. The rhubarb muffins were flying out the door. There was life in the place, there was community, there were greetings, hugs and farewells.
Not so three doors north. The neon four letter word above the door will remain dark until spring according to the sign on the door. "Sorry we are closed. See you in the spring."
56572 will remain open through the winter of 2006-07. The market, as small as it might be, will still be here. Business will be spread among the survivors who know that January, February and March are the hard months. To eat, drink and celebrate we'll go to the DQ, Larry's Deli, Subway, the Pool Hall, Senior Citzens, Riverside, Jimmy's, The Rapids, The VFW, the Tastee Freez, The Club and the Cornfield. First we have a few church dinners to go to. We can still shop for the holidays at home too. The perfect gift this year will be Pelican Bucks.
This was the week the Moose went into hibernation. It was the news of the week. Now the dust is starting to settle and soon will be covered by snow.
Sleep well Moose. Have a double shot nightcap and let's do breakfast - with a depth charge - when you wake up.

I for one will be supporting Tabi through the winter months.. let's help her stay open! I was there yesterday morning for my latte and the company of one of my very best friends.. I can't bear the thought of not having that beautiful little coffee shop to make my days brighter this winter... Let's all support them!
If one of your former Global Volunteers shows up on a Saturday in the depth of winter, might there be any familiar faces in the Riverside? The warm welcome you give us must still be thawed out even on the coldest January morning. That welcome must be impossible to freeze!
Those of you who haven't yet tried the food out at Larrys deli are really missing something. Becky serves up the best lunches around.. you really get a lot of bang for your buck.. she has awesome soup everyday (2 types) served with fresh rolls, she also makes a least 3 different entrees to name a few... Uff da tacos, chicken enhiladas... meatballs, and of course her awesome fried chicken..your entire meal is $3.99!!!!!!!! And if you just want a sandwich she has all kinds on all kinds of yummy breads .And they do have a nice eating area.. it is hard to spot.. but is there!
