Body of missing soldier found in slough
By Amie Steffen

The body of a missing military man was found in Pelican Rapids early Thursday afternoon when a shoulder-to-shoulder search turned up his cowboy hat in a slough.Troy Allen Schultz, 33, had been missing since his truck was found partially submerged in a slough a quarter of a mile from The Club, where he was last seen at 1 a.m Oct. 28. His body was found in a slough near 210th Avenue at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, just 200 to 250 yards from the slough where his truck was found.

Otter Tail County Sheriff Brian Schlueter said the official cause of death will be determined after the county coroner does an autopsy in the next few days. Schultz’s black cowboy hat was found first, leading search teams to his body 20 yards away, obscured by vegetation.

“It would have been nearly impossible for someone to see walking by,” Schlueter said. “If they wouldn’t have found the hat, I don’t think they would have seen him.”The Pelican Rapids Fire Department had offered to assist the sheriff’s department, the sheriff’s posse and volunteer citizens who had been combing the area since Schultz was reported missing Saturday night. They began a shoulder-to-shoulder search Thursday of the immediate area.

“From experience, you normally find people close to where it happened,” Schlueter said. Most of the immediate family had been notified by 4 p.m., he said. The OTC Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff’s Posse, Central Lake Search and Rescue, Pelican Rapids police and fire officials and volunteers all helped in the extensive air and ground search.

“There were a lot of volunteer man hours spent, people giving of themselves — it’s an awesome thing,” Schlueter said. “I’m glad it’s resolved for the family’s sake. You always wish it could have been resolved sooner.”
