Today Viking Elementary is honoring our veterans and military by participating in the Pocket Flag Project. Throughout the week, students have been folding small cloth flags and enclosing a personal message in a small package. These flags will be sent to Minnesota and US men and women who are serving our country. If you have a special address you would like to share, please send it to our office. This project was spearheaded by Cindi Strand, assisted by Ruth Holmgren, our student council, and sponsored by the Gilmore Weik Auxiliary Post 5252. Today, 9th grade boy scouts demonstrated actual flag folding and explained to our students what each fold means. WDAY came out today to do a story on this project, which will air on the 6:00 and 10:00 news tonight. I think all who watched how students processed concepts of patriotism and service today were touched. Thanks to all who brought the meaning of Veteran’s Day to the hearts and hands of the students at Viking Elementary.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

The mention of the poem "In Flander's Field" bring back memories of Everett Johnson reciting this from memory in the High School Auditorium every Memorial Day. He always used such emotion it took you back there in your mind. This is Veteran's Day, hopefully not looked at as just another holiday. Thanks and pray for the safety of our troops. This may be especially critical with the change in much of our government leadership, not all support the cause or the people.
Please thank the 2nd graders for the pocket flags, these are really important for military members in the war zones. These opportunities to teach our youth the respect and responsibilities that come with freedom can not be underestimated. I tried to view the clip on the WDAY link but was unable to find/see it. Thanks kids and Mrs. Strand.
One thing I have always loved about 56572 since moving here several years ago, is the sense of pride that the school tries to instill in our kids.
I didn't know about this project, as my kids are in the High School these days, but I should have known that our elementary school would be hard at work, as ever......to show our kids what these holidays are all about.
Just a little message for the editor of this blog... you missed a wonderful opportunity to share with the community and relate to others what Pelican Rapids is all about... Saturday a group of volunteers built a garage for Bob and Kathy Hanson, (parents of our fallen soldier, Joshua Robert Hanson.) This would have been a wonderful opportunity to share with others how a small community comes together in times of trial. Friends, neighbors, and co-workers of Kathy and Bob surprised them with the garage raising. (The Hansons had planned on building the garage before Josh's tragegy). They were away for the day and when they arrived home at approximately 6:00 p.m. the garage was almost complete. The participants even hung Christmas lights for the Hansons. It was a wonderful day and a great show of support for the Hanson family. Does anyone have pictures of the event to share with the editor?
