Early summer 2007.
911 call:
"Grease fire in the kitchen of the Cornfield Cafe."
Dunn Township is now under contract with DLFD, not PRFD.
It's six miles to Pelican Rapids, seventeen to Detroit Lakes.
Which FD responds? With how many trucks? Who pays the bill?

Great example. Come on Dunn Township - get with the program. I wish I lived across the road so I could be in Dunn and work hard to keep Dunn with Pelican Rapids FD. I would want the FD to drive 6 miles not 17 - better chance of saving my property. What about the rest of you??
The 911 call would go to the Ottertail County dispatch and OT would have to put in a call to the Becker County dispatch.
Under a mutual aid contract with the Pelican Rapids Fire Department, DL would request that OT dispatch the Pelican Rapids Fire Department to that location. The PRFD would respond within minutes and, more then likely, take care of the situation before DL arrives. Then the cornfields insurance company would send a check to the DL fire Department. I'm not sure how the mutual aid agreements work now, but it use to be that expenses of the PRFD for this call would be split among the city and PRFD's contracted townships. This works both ways.
Assuming that the city is willing to participate in this mutual aid contract (as we do will all the department in our area) this scenario could repeat itself all over Dunn township.
I hate to see the PRFD not in a mutual contract with DL because it does work both ways. The CER's fire in downtown PR being a perfect example where both DL and FF were called. But I can also understand why the city of PR would choose not to participate.
Could we say Dunn Township Board instead of just Dunn Township. That is how it really is except for the other 4 or 5 who want to live in Johnsonvilla.
When comparing response time for DL vs. PR, one must consider the increased difficulty of navigating traffic from the DL fire hall to all the way past the Soo Pass Ranch. Especially in the summer. Don't believe me, drive it once. PR has a lot easier, quicker response to areas in Dunn when it comes to traffic flow and obstacles.
