McPoops

Now the debate about the PRFD is winding down, how do you feel about The Golden Arches coming to 56572? One hundred and twenty-four years 56572 has survived Big Mac attacks.

Do you suppose Poop is nervous to work under the shadow of the Arches? Doubt it. Poop's burgers are good, they are priced right and you can wash them down with beer. Just who is miscalculating? Poops numbers look really good. I'll put my money on Poop.

Poop is all about Derek at Crossroads. Every now and then you hear people say the young people graduate from high school and leave the community. Poop is home grown as is Doris. They left town, but returned to stick their necks out, risk their savings and go in debt to re-open businesses that we have been weeping over ever since their doors were closed.
Is McDonalds going to be good for the community?
I doubt you'll see Ronald McDonald being an active Chamber member, JC member, or Octoberfest member.
People will have more of a reason to stop in Pelican this summer if the Dairy Queen, Tasstee Freeze, Crossroads, The Rapids, Muddy Moose, and Jimmy's are open.
I hope people will support locally owned and operated businesses in our community ,and we
can survive the invasion of a "big
box" Wall Street company.

Yeah, I s'pose it's best to limit the number of businesses in Pelican Rapids. We don't want to become a "destination" for out-of-towners. Next thing you know, someone will want to build a bike path and connect us with the rest of the state.

I hope this last comment is a poor attempt at being funny. I think making Pelican Rapids a vibrant destination community is an exciting prospect. I am frustrated with the vein of negativity I have seen in the community against anything new or any change. A bike path would be a wonderful addition to the area as well as a new school and community center. It is time to work together rather than try to put a stop to everything. Let's turn all this negativity in to something positive - and see what a wonderful vibrant community Pelican Rapids will be.

I agree. McDonalds and the new Park Region Co-op gas station would make a great destination for bikers, and Hwy 59 travelers. I commend the city of P.R. for being aggressive in promoting growth within the community and surrounding area. Through Tax Increment Financing, Lake Region Electric received financial assistance in building their facility, and Park Region Co-op will receive the same tax breaks to help fund their building project. With this type of aid, both projects were made more feasible.
REA members will benefit for many years from clean reliable electrical service, and Park Region Patrons should see an increase in their dividend checks with the increase in business they will do.
Both Co-ops,their members, and their patrons will benefit from continued growth in Pelican Rapids and the surrounding area. A bike trail, a community center, a new school, and a new fire hall are positive endeavors which will bring more business dollars to our co-ops .
We need to offer our support in making these projects a reality also.

First of all I would just like the say thank you to everyone who has come out to Crossroads Corner to support our efforts!! You are all very appreciated. We are not afraid or against a McDonalds opening in town at all. They are fast food and that offers something different for people who don't have time to wait for our menu items. I would however like to see a taco bell/taco johns rather than a McDonlalds. Why open a third fast food burger place when you have a tastee freeze and a dairy queen? Variety never hurt anyone. A McDonalds would hurt the DQ and KILL the Tastee Freeze. I just don't want to see anymore places shut down if we can avoid it. Thanks agian to everyone who supports our efforts!!!Keep coming out!

I agree! A Taco Johns would get my service more than McDonald's.

Great news Pelican Rapids. Go McDonalds!!. It's good to have businesses which will bring the new residents to town. Hopefully our locally grown "watchdog" group will let it happen. I'm amazed how some comments are so negative. I've never been part of a community which has to be so forcefully dragged into the future and progress.

I don't remember hearing that Taco Johns was interested. Let's stop complaining and be thankful a buisness like McDonalds is interested in our awesome town!

If someone want to open a taco bell, more power to them. Go for it.

If I understand correctly, McDonalds approached Park Region - not the other way around. But why stop at Taco Bell since we are wishing - a Kentucky Fried Chicken might be my choice. Congrats to Park Region for boldly going ahead with this.

Will McDonalds pay a living wage to the 56572 people who would be employed there? Can locally owned eating places compete with McDonalds? What effect has Walmart, Home Depot, Sam's, K-Mart, etc within driving distance from 56572 had on the local businesses?

I have lived in P.R. for soon 58 years (my whole life so far) and must say it used to be a far better place to live. I have commuted to work in Fargo for 16 years. Still get my groceries, meds and shop locally for as much as I can possibly do. Upon occasion, I do have to stop at 'big box' places for things not available locally. Amazed to see local folks (some paid from tax money or utility money) I see with stuff in their carts that could be obtained locally.

Finally, the bike trail was basically killed by the heavy handed, steam roller efforts of the "planners". I am not a regular supporter of the "watchdog" group, but was very offended when I saw a map of the first proposed trail that went 1/2 mile on my property (been in the family for 120 years) and no one had even contacted me about the possiblity. I do have voice mail.

Many of my co-workers have lake property in this area. Informal survey of these folk shows that the last thing they want to do on a weekend at the lake is go shopping. Several had no idea what was available in 56572. Only that they paid dearly in property taxes for their weekend getaways at the lake.

Final point-just because something is labeled new or progressive doesn't mean it's inherently good or bad.

I'm not signing this as I don't want responses about me not supporting the community. First time I've made an anonymous comment.

P.S.-my lengthy posting about 56572 and the entry of big box, etc contains an error. My family has been in P.R. for 127 years, not 120. The 120 years is just on this farm. Actually moved to P.R. in 1880 and lived in the area by the river that became Pelican Rapids in 1883. And none of my wages that I spend in P.R. come directly from local sources.

I'm not sure I want a McDonalds coming to Pelican. It just doesnt seem to fit in with the rest of the town. But if we really NEED to put up a fast food place, I would make it Taco Johns/ Taco Bell. I think they would get better business, and it would fit a little more comfortably in Pelican.
