The Park Region Coop station on South Broadway was demolished today to make room for a new station, convenience store and a McDonald's restaurant.

one day we will look back at this picture and say do you remember when there was a atual gas station here the pumped the gas for you wasnt that park region.
Times Change. This new gas station and McDonalds will bring some jobs and some additional money to Pelican Rapids.
The cost seems to be a little bit of history.
That balance is hard to find, progress versus tradition. In this case, since the co-op hasn't been used in quite some time, I think Progress and economic development win.
"Co-op hasn't been used in quite some time"???? It as open and operating right up to the week of demolition.
You do realize that Townmart is a branch station of Farmers' Coop? As is the bait store.
I do not believe McDonald's is progress or the jobs it provides will make any substantial difference. Other than hurting existing eating places that are locally owned.
1:46 a.m. is not bitter and angry. Just tired of hearing and reading about how 56572 will be transformed into someplace so much better than it has ever been by folks who don't have a clue as to what is really here already "co-op hasn't been used in quite sometime"???
Have you ever had people you just met come into your home and point out all the faults and gush about "the potential" for your lifelong home? I'm not a spokesman for "the lifers on 56572" but can say that many are tired of the attitude of "newbies and immigrants".
I would just like to add to the 8:27 A.M. comment that not only do they tell you all of your faults, they expect you to borrow a bunch of money and fix them all so that the place will be more appealing to the people who are visiting. Progress is excellent, I think that most just want to be careful when using borrowed money. Not all risks give you a good return on your money.
Even being a "56572 lifer", something inside me says that the community was built on taking risks--something the "lifers" don't think should be taken anymore. Mike--good post on the other blog article--it would really fit here too.
It's more tiring to see the attitude of some of "56572 lifers" than the attitude of some of the "newbies" who are willing to take a chance to improve everyone's quality of life.
I would point out that the new library, the old hospital, the REA building on the north side of town, the turkey plant, the creamery, the elevator, the co-op gas station (which was very busy with trucks filling with diesel fuel, etc), the Park Theater becoming the Fire Hall are all parts of the contribution/progressive thinking of 56572 lifers.
But progress must be something we can afford and is practical. My quality of life would be enhanced by driving an Escalade, but I can't afford it and would be a disaster to consider. Same with many recent projects in 56572.
I can't say that I have ever had people I just met come into my home and start telling me what is wrong with it. That sounds so ridiculous. Another groping, desperate attempt to besmirch the "newbies" and the "immigrants". Try growing up.
Wow-I didn't know I could besmirch anyone. Really no need to do so though. Comments on the blog about Pelican Drug being built so it blocks the view of Pelican Pete, vast gravel area behind McDonalds and abandoned Park Region station would seem would seem to negate the need to besmirch.
Did you know there was a low spot that was actually a swamp before Severson Drug was built blocking the view of the Pelican? And a small used car place where the post office is now? I bought a '61 Olds convertable there. Post office looks better. And the "vast gravel area" behind McDonalds is actually today an area for AMPI milk trucks to use to transfer milk from a 4-5 county area? Several million dollars a year. The area is also used by the Farmers' Mill which provides feed for customer as far away as Oaks, ND? And is doing more business than ever before in it's long history? Same with the Farmers' Elevator.
No need to besmirch anyone. Is there a term like 'autobesmirch'? I'll grow up if you get a clue as to what's really the reality of 56572.
You talk about the newbies and immigrants.Dont you realize that the newbies and immigrenta are the new lifers here in 56572 we have the old ones going out and the new comming in

Thank you for your consideration.
I'm sorry, but the place was in such poor shape, and I had never seen anyone there, so I assumed it was abandoned. I was wrong.
However, that doesn't change the intent of my post.
