It's a dense August morning fog as Egge Construction workers claw away at the Park Region Coop foundation while one door south workers from Bob Bristlin & Sons Construction of Detroit Lakes are putting up the walls of the new PRFD.

Does anyone know if they plan any grass areas around these two new buildings or is it all tar & cement?
If one looks at old photos of that area, it was a park-like setting, and was named "Legion Park". There were trees, shrubs, and an arbor-like entrance. Beautiful!
Like a park...boy, what happened to it? It had really turned into industrial blight. Hopefully the new can improve downtown's appearance!
Legion Park? How long ago was that? I only remember Lee Chevrolet/Minneapolis-Moline dealership and Park Region Co-op Oil. Across the street was the Ford Tractor dealership. And Park Region's tire shop. Also Haarstick's Grocery.
I'm not sure Golden Arches there will be any better than "industrial blight".
Considering the need for a new firehall, and the tearing down of a condemned/torched building and a older building next to it, I think this is a great improvement to the area. Once I thought it would have been nice if the co-op could have saved the neat looking front of the building, but it was in such disrepair,(judging from what was revealed in the demolition) that it was better to start over and improve the block. There's a great river that is screaming to be turned into an even greater green way setting! So, can we enjoy the the development when it finally happens!!!

I don't think anyone can disagree that McDonald's will be a VERY popular place for the high schoolers at lunch time (and all the time).

What happens now when there's a fire call during the lunch hour?
Where is the city planning in all this?
I think that progress is good, and I am glad to see a new fire hall and a new gas station/McDonald's. But, I have to question if the fire hall location and planning was thought out properly. I have serious concerns (which I did bring up to the city/fire dept before ground breaking), and unfortunately nothing was changed.
My point... Make sure that you stress to your kids to stay alert around the fire hall, since we can't change it now, we need to make sure the kids take it seriously!!!
Who's to say that the school will still be there in 1,2,5-10 years. Maybe, maybe not. But, then the location won't matter. I'm sure there isn't a law against putting a McDonalds near a fire hall.
Back to my question, Does anyone know what the landscape will be around these two building? Grass, trees, outside seating/eating etc.
It's so sad to see some of the negative comments regarding new things in Pelican Rapids. I have been on this blog a few times and always sign off feeling depressed. I was hoping this time it would be different... but my suspicions are correct. Why can't you naysayers give it up and start supporting the community for a change? I'm not sure the blog helps Pelican Rapids at all.
I still think the negative Nellies can move. I am sure there will be plenty of people will help them pack their boxes and even provide some gas money. Imagine what Pelican Rapids could accomplish without them.
To the blogger that doesn't think that our kids are smart enough to know when the fire trucks are responding to a call, I think the kids will probably do the same thing they do now when walking past the existing fire hall on the way home from school & GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!!! Good grief, it is just moving across the street. I would be more concerned with the adults that still don't seem to think they have to yeild or pull over for emergency vehicles.
To the person concerned about kids walking to McDonalds with their ipods on and not hearing the fire trucks, first of all, almost all of the firemen have children, so, that will be their first thought and, ipods are not allowed in school, so they should have their eyes and ears open. Please give your children a little more credit than that. I think the kids are smarter than you give them credit for.
The bottom line is this. You can fight the wind or go with the breeze.
Those who fight the wind often end up clinging to a reality that doesn't exist anymore.
Those who go with the breeze can adapt and find new great things along the way.
This blog has been good for Pelican Rapids.
Everybody has a right to their own opinions.
The negative comments are the same old bunch and are soon squashed by positive ones.

To Anonymous who always feels depressed after signing off the blog.
Write something positive. That attitude is just what the negative responders want.
Look at all the positive comments and dwell on them.
Sometimes fighting a prevailing wind is a good thing. Not going along with every fad and ill-conceived idea can be a form of bravery. Independent thinking and holding fast to basic values (community, honesty, financial responsibility, respect for the past and learning from it, etc) can lead to great things as well.
Integrity and progressive thought are not mutually exclusive. Course this if from an old history teacher.
I really thought that I had "seen it all" on this blog. Worried about the safety of the kids during a fire call???? First of all .. only 9-12th grade students are allowed to leave the grounds during lunch, I would hope that they are old enough to stay out of the way of fire trucks etc...
I really can't believe this... people need to stop 'borrowing trouble' and do something positive with all of this energy. Maybe go work at the thrift store?? Volunteer at church the sr. center or highrise? I hear they are always looking for help..

appreciate that the editor gives us the "good, bad and
ugly" of living in Otter Tail County.
Life IS FULL of good and bad-and so is Pelican Rapids.
My friends in other towns accuse me of living in
Utopia because I'm always full of news from "my little
town up north".
We've lived in small towns and big cities and we love
Pelican Rapids--all of Pelican Rapids: warts and all.
I'm thankful I live in a town where I can experience
so much of the real world.
