Voters in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, defeated a $33 million bond referendum Thursday that would have renovated the School District’s elementary school and built a new middle school/high school.
The vote of 1,614 against and 748 in favor, took until about midnight to tally, said Superintendent Kent Baldry.
“I think that the board was disappointed in the outcome, but at this point, that’s the election results they’ve been dealt,” he said.
“They’re going to take a break away from it and rethink their position … and kind of regroup for what they may decide to do,” he added.
Harold Marty, an outspoken critic of the proposal, also issued a statement.
“With the defeat of the bond issue, we hope the School Board and administration will be open to working with the concerned taxpayer group on facility proposals that will be acceptable to both sides of the issue,” he said.
He and many other opponents have no complaint with renovating the elementary school.
“That’s good and needed,” he said.
But the district doesn’t need the proposed 155,075-squarefoot secondary school and can’t afford its $23 million price tag, Marty said.
“We’re not a big district. We don’t need a Cadillac. We can get by with a Chevrolet,” he said.
