Lowell H. Smestad, 84, of Northfield, Minnesota, died September 1 in Minneapolis due to complications following surgery. A retired Lutheran pastor, Rev. Smestad served parishes in Pelican Rapids, New Richland, Mapleton, and Kenyon, Minnesota; and Orofino and Kamiah, Idaho. He graduated from Westbrook, Minn. High School, St. Olaf College, and Luther Seminary. He served as a radioman in the Army Air Corps, stationed with the 459th Bomb Group in Italy during World War II.
Lowell Harding Smestad was born December 11, 1920 in Dovray, Minnesota, to Helge and Mathilda (Hojem) Smestad. He married H. Eulalie Fagerholt on August 10, 1952 in Hoople, North Dakota. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Ruth Smestad Anglin (Ronnie); Gloria Smestad (John Maher); Joanne Claussen (Kurt); and Carol Anderson (Gary); four grandchildren; a sister, Grace Tande (Ev); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Halge, sister Ruth, and infant sister Julia.
Services will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 500 W. Third Street, Northfield, on Wednesday, September 7 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Benson & Langehough Funeral Home, 201 Fourth Street, Northfield, and at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorials preferred to Lutheran Social Service, Luther Seminary, Lutheran World Relief, or Red Cross Disaster Fund.
