Burying the hatchet

Maybe it's just me, maybe it's not.

A few short years ago WDAY-TV in Fargo did a hatchet job of a story about our High School. It was a messy divorce, after what had been many good years of marriage. Our basketball coach Rex Haugen, when he wasn't coaching, was Big Eddie's Color Man at the District and Region basketball tournaments. Johnson's Furniture had a nightly commercial spot on the ten o'clock news. The "Pelican Rapids sure to make you feel at home" jingle was heard on the six o'clock news. Then the story, then the divorce.

So?

It's tournament time again. Our boys basketball team, ranked number two in the State of Minnesota, won the Section 8AA Final last night in Crookston. WDAY had to hype a team from Eastern Otter Tail County where their TV signal tends to fade. Sure enough, the Eagles from New York Mills pulled off "The Upset of the Year". Dilworth-Glyndon Felton, Hawley, Barnesville all the darlings of WDAY and Big Brother The Forum had lost. The Forum focused on Mayville winning in North Dakota Class B. When Pelican Rapids defeated Breckenridge on Channel 6 this past week, the Forum journalist started his article
the next morning with a fashion report about the Cowboy Coach. None of the writing implied that we have a good team. We should have won last year and did not. We should have won this year and did.

So?

If WDAY and The Forum want to bury the hatchet with Pelican Rapids, they can try. First they should take a step in that direction. Will there be any coverage at the State Tournament this week? Will you be by on Monday to sell advertising? On your way through town to New York Mills, stop by for coffee at Riverside. Let's talk.
