What consolation can one give a mother after the shocking loss of her second son, after the recent loss of her mother, after the tragic death of her first son, after the tragic death of her husband? Knowing this mother as I do, I regarded her as Professor of the Graduate Class of Grief. Until I spoke with her on the telephone last night. During the day an email with few words was all that I could muster. She called me. It didn't sound like her. I told her so. She she had been crying. For the past two days she has been crying. My respect for her as The Grief Professor waivered. It was restored this morning when I woke up to find my own pillow damp.
Message received loud and clear. Cry is what we must. Reach out to the lonely, seek help for the depressed, condole, console and cherish life. Anything else Professor? See you Friday.
