MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The National Guard identified on Friday the 43rd person with Minnesota ties to have died in connection with the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was Staff Sgt. Joshua Robert Hanson, 27, of Dent.
The guard said Hanson died Wednesday near Khalidiyah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device exploded near his military vehicle. The same attack wounded six other National Guard soldiers, but they were able to return to duty.
Hanson was assigned to Company A, 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 136th Infantry, based in Detroit Lakes.
"The loss of our brother, Staff Sgt. Joshua Hanson, is felt across the state of Minnesota," said Major General Larry Shellito, the Adjutant General of Minnesota, in a prepared statement.
"It's our priority to assist the Hanson family during this difficult time," he continued. "I ask that all Minnesotans take time to reflect in a moment of silence to honor this young hero."
The Guard said Hanson's family did not wish to be interviewed by the media.
On Thursday, the Pentagon said another Minnesota soldier died. That soldier was 20-year-old Spc. Qixing Lee of Minneapolis, who was part of the 4th Infantry Division, based in Fort Hood, Texas. He died Sunday, also after an IED exploded near his vehicle.

God be with the Hanson family. What a huge loss. I cannot imagine the pain.
My family had two losses last winter and Kathy Hanson was right there with her kindnesses for the family. It is probably a blessing that we do not know what is in store for us. My prayers are with the family and a big Thank you to Jim Christianson for providing us with this wonderful communication.
To the Hanson Family,
I was schocked to hear the news of Josh. My condolences to your whole family. I did not know Josh personally, but was an old TKD friend of Jake's many years ago.
Jake, I know we haven't seen each other in many years, but I hope you are doing ok. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Please contact me if you ever want to talk.
