Give us this week our weekly bread. 56572 does not have an independent bakery. Local Farmers Market vendors have been trying to meet the demand for baked goods and pastries. Norma Johnson has stood on the sidewalk all summer. Next to her, Gordy Scott with his doughnuts and as of late fruit pies and as of last week (for Oktoberfest) Kuchen. A touch of whipped cream was all that was needed on the Peach Kuchen (photo) we bought. The last few weeks Elsa Stowman from Rothsay has been selling homemade breads, brownies and granola on the sidewalk. She calls her business Bethlehem Breads. If you see someone bundled in a white down coat, it's Elsa. Maybe more for protection from beestings than from the cold. The bees know.
Our current favorite 56572 bread is the Vie de France Multi-grain and Bouchons at Larry's. Our perennial favorite is baked by a local gentleman. It's not for sale, you must be invited to dinner there or if you are lucky have a birthday to taste it. He also makes good stuff to wash it down with, also not for sale.

Oh how I miss the old City Bakery! Those were the days!
I miss Bud's buns - Hamburger buns, that is.
